RIVEROCK

UNITY

The root splits the rock.
The rock anchors the root.
Weakness engenders strength.

The rock divides the water.
The water surrounds the rock.
Softness encompasses hardness.

With patient vigilance,
the sage spots opportunities,
to flow into and fulfil.

First observe;
then deserve.

The dynamic interplay between strength and weakness, symbolised by the 'forces' or 'principles' of Yang and Yin, is a central theme of Taoism.
"Soft and weak overcome hard and strong" is an oft-reiterated 'mantra', comparable to such proverbs as "Pride comes before a fall" or "All things come to those who wait".

This concept finds obvious physical expression in the 'martial arts', but is also a ubiquitous influence on strategy and negotiation in military, political and commercial spheres.
Within Taoist philosophy, it attempts to portray the action by which oppositions may be reconciled, stability restored, and harmony or symbiosis achieved.
